Application Guidelines for the Asiatic Research Institute (ARI) Monograph Series Grant
1. Program Objective
To encourage and expand opportunities for academic publications by Northeast Asian Studies specialists, the Asiatic Research Institute provides financial support for the publication of books on Northeast Asia.
2. Eligibility
PhD scholars in the fields of humanities and social sciences who are planning to publish research manuscripts related to Northeast Asia (i.e. Korea, China, Japan and other countries within the region as well as international or transnational relations among these countries) are eligible to apply. Revision of PhD dissertation for book publication will also be considered.
3. Scope
Single-author works, edited volumes, and PhD dissertations on Northeast Asia in the fields of humanities or social sciences to be published as ARI Monograph Series. All works must be written in English. Publishing outside Korea by a foreigner publisher, applicants are responsible for choosing and arranging matters with publishers, and they must consult with ARI before finally choosing a publisher. When applicants would like to publish in Korea, they are strongly recommended to choose a publisher that ARI suggests.
4. Ineligibility
The following categories will not be supported:
- Textbooks
- Conference proceedings and programs
- Periodicals, including special issues
- Book manuscripts in which previously-published articles and essays account for over 30% of overall content
- Museum pamphlets, guidebooks, floor plans
- Translations of literary works
5. Grant Amount
The program will subsidize costs up to US$12,000.
6. Grant Period
In general, 24 months. The grant period will start on the day when award notification is received by the applicant. The final draft of the manuscript should be submitted to the Asiatic Research Institute within two years of the starting date of the grant period.
