Thus far there have been various research panels conducting research on China’s foreign relations. However, relatively less research has been made through research panels on themes regarding China’s national politics.

Through the Research Panel on Political Reform and Democracy, we hope to become the lead the discussion regarding Chinese political reform and democracy.

China has successfully achieved market system based on its rapid economic growth through reform and opening policy during the past 30 years. Now China is going through its second period of reform and opening. The core assignment of China in this period can be said to be political reform and change and the establishment of democracy.

Thus, we have established this panel with Korean scholars of Chinese studies in order to conduct research on China’s political reform and change.

The research themes of this panel include the following:

-       China’s understanding of democracy and ‘China’s distinctive democracy’

-       Economic development and democracy: marketization, economic development, democracy

-       Growth of the civil society, formation of citizenry, Chinese perception on democracy

-       Political system and democracy: election and political party

-       Political culture and democracy: socialism, Confucianism, and democracy

-       political system reform and democracy: democratization within party and reform of National People’s Congress

-       state system and democracy: federalism or unitary state system
