China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea have played decisive roles in forming and transforming regional order in East Asia. It can never be overemphasized that academic exchange and networking by scholars from these three countries are definitely of utmost importance in fostering an amicable regional order. Since 2011, experts and scholars from Korea University, University of Tokyo, and Tsinghua University have jointly organized the East Asian Community Forum (EACF) as a trilateral exchange mechanism to discuss a wide range of issues and problems, including peace, development, and cooperation in East Asia.
The year 2014 marks the 120th anniversary of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). The lessons of history are worth learning, but the future is more important. In commemoration of the start of the war, the three parties agreed to hold the 4th EACF on September 28, 2014, at Tsinghua University on the theme of “The Formation and Future of International Order in East Asia.” Topics on the agenda include how to draw lessons from history and how to recognize and analyze security problems in East Asia, the development and transformation of the region’s economic and trade situation, and prospects for regional cooperation.
