Key Thematic Issues
In April 2018, President Moon Jae-In of South Korea had a summit meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong Eun, by issuing their Panmunjom Declaration for Peace in the Korean Peninsula. It also aims Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula, including a plan to go beyond the 1953 armistice and formally end the Korean War. However, while the declaration mentioned ‘reunification’, it does not make the prospect imminent. Due to a huge economic gap that opened up between South and North Korea after more than seven decades of division in the Korean Peninsula, it is expected that integration between South and North Korea would naturally give rise to a number of issues in political, economic, social, and cultural areas. It implies that two Koreas need to carefully design their process of cooperation and reunification in the Korean Peninsula, by utilizing lessons from experiences of other countries in the world. Vietnam would be one of these countries in the world, where North and South Vietnam united as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was officially established in 1976.
This event serves as a workshop to explore what lessons from the Vietnamese reunification can be utilized for the reunification in the Korean Peninsula from political, economic, and social perspectives. The workshop aims to cover the following theme, among others:
