Migration in Asia and Human Rights - Chung, Chin-Sung (Dept. of Sociology, Seoul National University)
Human history is a history of migration. In recent centuries the movement of populations from rural to urban areas has been a central phenomenon of industrialization. Now, in the era of global industrialization, we are facing the movement of people beyond national boundaries. Moreover, the scale of this international migration has been dramatically increased because of wars both between and within nation-states and for political and religious reasons that fall outside declared wars. Women’s migration for the purpose of cross-border marriage has also increased, which can be explained as a patriarchal distortion of economic migration. Such international migration flows from disputed areas to peaceful areas and from underdeveloped countries to advanced industrialized ones.....






















Korean Studies in the United Kingdom - Grace Koh (SOAS, University of London)
In recent years, there has been much discussion on the trends and prospects for Korean studies in Europe, and some of the main points have included the European image of Korea and its implications, the state of affairs with respect to institutional developments and academic systems in different European countries, and types of support desired and/or required from Korean organisations.





Korean studies in the United Kingdom has had its ups and downs partly due to funding issues, but on the whole there has been a rising interest in Korea in the region, and prospects for its growth and development have remained relatively positive. At present, there are three higher education institutions in the United Kingdom that offer degrees in Korean studies – the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London), University of Sheffield, and University of Oxford. The majority of accredited higher education institutions in the United Kingdom are state-funded, and major curtailment of funds have affected some universities including Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne, where Korean language instruction and Korea-related courses used to be offered until recently...
