[Colloquium] Regional Governance and Japan as a Cusp State:
Whither Spatial Boundaries in East Asia?

Date: June 11, 2012, 4-6 p.m.
Venue: ARI Conference Room (3rd floor)
Speaker: Glenn Hook, Professor, University of Sheffield, Britain

Professor Glenn Hook, director of the National Institute of Japanese Studies in Britain,
described Japan’s insufficient decolonization and the U.S-Japan security treaty as the
major obstacles to the regional integrationist processes in East Asia. Noting East Asia has
formulated a tapestry of governance with a variety of regional organizations with different
scales and memberships, Professor Hook said many states, including Japan, are in a process
of hedging by operating the strategies of inclusion and exclusion.
